HYDRATION FOR THE HEAT
One of the toughest things about training this time of year is dealing with the wind and heat! We all know the importance of keeping hydrated when working out but it is even more important when the temperature is approaching the triple digits. In regards to hydration, one of the things I stress to all my athletes is to get a pre and post exercise weight with each workout. Most people do not realize the amount of fluid they lose even in a short workout of 1 hour. I like for all my athletes to get their post exercise weight back up to their pre exercise weight within a few hours of the end of each workout, but to also stay within a 2% range of their pre workout body weight. If they find they have lost more than 2% of the pre workout weight, it’s a good indicator they need to drink a little more for their next workout. Keep in mind, drinking just water is not enough! It’s very important you are taking in a drink which includes some electrolytes as well. By keeping track of body weight pre and post exercise, you should be able to dial in your fluid needs for your next workout!
